Help with Government of Canada Departments
An important part of my role as a Member of Parliament is to assist you in resolving issues and problems you may encounter interacting with Government of Canada departments. As an MP, I have hired a small and effective team who work every day to support constituents in getting your issues and problems resolved, particularly when published standard processing times appear to have been exceeded.
Most issues and problems my staff and I assist with involve the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), or Service Canada (for Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan and related programs), however, we are able to provide support for most agencies and departments within the Government of Canada.
If you have an issue or problem with a department and have made efforts to resolve it on your own, or if your matter has exceeded the published standard processing time, please contact my office. We will review the matter with you and advise you if and how we are able to assist.
It is important to note that my staff and I will not attempt to interfere with or influence the decision made by the department (apart from making sure they have all the relevant documentation and understand the circumstances of the matter). We also will not request that applications be prioritized within the queue unless the department has established criteria for expediting applications and the application in question meets those criteria. My office cannot provide legal or financial advice. Our goal is to ensure constituents are being treated fairly by the government within the law and the established process.
Tours of Parliament Hill and Question Period Tickets
If you will be travelling to Ottawa and would like a tour of Parliament Hill, and/or to attend Question Period when the House of Commons is sitting, my office would be very pleased to arrange this for you. Please contact us a minimum of two weeks before your preferred dates. Please note that sometimes tours and Question Period access are not possible due to the Parliamentary calendar.
Notary Public / Commissioner of Oath Services
Members of Parliament are, by virtue of their election, a Notary Public and a Commissioner of Oaths. Should you need documents notarized, I would be very pleased to assist. Please contact my office a minimum of two weeks before the documents are needed. There is no fee. Please note that due to the House of Commons schedule, it may not always be possible for me to notarize documents on a timely basis, as I am generally in Ottawa when the House is sitting.
Congratulatory Messages and Certificates
I would be very pleased to offer a congratulatory message and certificate for milestone birthdays and wedding anniversaries, or other occasions, upon request. My office can also assist in requesting the same services from the Prime Minister, and/or from the Governor General if the request meets their criteria. Please contact my office a minimum of four weeks before the special day to allow for signing and delivery.
Knowing Who to Call – Municipal, Provincial, and Federal
It can be challenging to know which level of government to contact about a specific matter. Boundaries for your municipal ward and provincial constituency do not match the federal boundaries. My staff and I are happy to assist in pointing you in the right direction if you’re unsure of which level of government to contact or who represents you municipally or provincially.
The following is a list of common matters about which my office is contacted but which are under the jurisdiction of the provincial government, where you are represented by your Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta (MLA):
- Healthcare (Alberta Health Services, Primary Health Alberta, EMS, etc.)
- Education (curriculum, records, supervision of school districts)
- Provincial highways and safety concerns
The following is a list of common matters about which my office is contacted but which are under the jurisdiction of the municipal government, where you are represented by your City Councillor:
- City Services and 3-1-1 call escalation (garbage, water, traffic, City facilities and parks)
- Calgary Police Services and Calgary Fire Department
- Enmax (electricity and natural gas)
As your Member of Parliament, I work for you, the residents of Calgary Signal Hill. While I cannot assist with absolutely every request you may have of me, I am here to do all I can to help, and I look forward to hearing from you.
